One of the biggest things that can affect a teenager both emotionally and socially during their high school years is the problem of acne, and if you have ever been in that situation, you know full well what I’m talking about.
Then you have all of the adults in your life, or other individuals who have no idea what it’s like, telling you what you need to do, or what you need to cut out of your diet in order to get rid of it. Things like “you’re eating too much junk food”, or “you need to wash your face more”, or “quit eating so much chocolate”, which can all really start to grate on your nerves after a while.
The fact of the matter is that it’s likely that the majority of what you thought to be true about acne both as a teenager, and as an adult, is likely all a myth. The focus of this article is going to be on dispelling 10 of those acne myths that everybody has been promoting for so long, for which they have no scientific evidence to back them up.

1. You can get acne from eating chocolate.
This is likely one of the most common myths that people have developed over the years as a way to steer kids away from eating too much chocolate or other sweets, but there is absolutely no evidence to back it up. Chocolate never has, nor will it ever play a role in whether or not an individual suffers from an acne breakout.
This myth is easily dispelled when an individual knows what actually causes acne. Acne is created from a presence of sebum, which is created within the endocrine system, and has absolutely nothing to do with an individual’s digestive tract.
So the next time somebody tries to tell you that eating too much chocolate is what’s giving you the bad acne, take another bite and say, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

2. Eating specific foods can lead to a breakout of acne.
There hasn’t ever been a study that has positively linked any sort of dietary habit directly with the presence of acne. On the other hand, there has been some speculation from individuals who claim that eating a diet consisting of lean meats, which are a source of high-protein, and a selection of different whole grains, can reduce the chances that individual will suffer from acne.

3. Washing your face more often is going to get rid of your acne.
The only way that this could hold any validity at all, is if an individual never washes their face at all. If however, you’re not a slob, and actively wash your face at least two times a day, then we can feel safe in saying that this is not an issue.
There have been studies that have been completed that have shown that washing your face too often can result in your skin drying out, rather than benefiting or helping the actual acne problem, so try not to ever wash your face more than a couple times a day.
Additionally, if you’re using any special type of face cleaners, it’s important to note that these are only going to stay on your face for a couple of minutes after you’re done washing, so you’ll be better off making use of retinoid creams and other leave on acne medications since they are significantly more efficacious.
4. Stress causes acne.
This is one the acne myths that might hold a little bit of weight due to the fact that whenever an individual suffers from stress, it causes the release of specific hormones which in turn leads to a greater production of oil on the skin.
Another issue that stress causes in an individual is that it has a tendency to weaken a person’s immune system. And due to the fact that acne is caused by bacteria, when you have a weakened immune system, your immune system is going to be less likely to destroy all of that bad bacteria, which could very likely give way to a breakout.
5. Popping a pimple will help it to go away faster.
It’s never a good idea to pop a pimple because of the fact that doing so results in the top layer of your skin becoming damaged. Due to that, it’s not uncommon for bad cases of acne to cause significant permanent scarring when they are popped.

There are several products on the market that effectively conceal acne, and also contain some of the nonprescription medications that are commonly effective like resorcinol, salicylic acid, and benzyl peroxide. You can also find other acne treatment products that provide tinting for the skin if that is something that you’re interested in.
7. An effective treatment for getting rid of acne is steam.
This myth is absolutely false, and that is proved out through several studies, one of which was done in India where it gets really hot, and all of the individuals who took part in it claimed that whenever they got too hot, or started sweating, it made their acne significantly worse.
So in essence, if you are suffering from acne, stay out of the sauna, stay out of the heat, and try not to sweat to profusely if at all possible. It’s important to try and keep your skin as cool as you possibly can.
8. You can clear up your acne by tanning.
This is another myth that is completely false, and in fact is a case where can actually make your acne significantly worse.
There have been some studies that have shown that specific types of light can help to treat acne, but this is not the light that is common within any of the tanning beds. Ultraviolet light is a known cause for premature aging, as well one of the causes for skin cancer, so not only will it make your acne worse, but it will also lead to other significant health risks.
If you are suffering from a really bad case of acne, then your best bet will be going to see your dermatologist to see what they can do for you. One of the processes that a dermatologist can use is what is known as a chemical peel. This process actually works at opening up all of your blocked pores, without causing any harm to your skin.
9. Putting on sunscreen is going to make your acne hurt more.
There is some truth to this myth, in that there are some types of sunscreens that are made with chemicals that can cause aggravation to the skin.
One such brand is called Helioplex, which makes use of a chemical reaction in order to dissipate the UV light when it comes in contact with your skin. One of the side effects of this is heat bumps, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to use that product on skin that is suffering from acne.
With that said, you just need to find a sunscreen that doesn’t use any of those chemical reactions. Such products are going to most often make use of zinc oxide as the protective agent, so try to find brands with that in it.
10. Putting toothpaste on your acne can cure it.
This is another one of those acne myths that are absolutely false, and don’t provide any benefit whatsoever. This one typically arises from an individual running out of their acne medication, and who then goes on to Google to seek out any type of “natural acne remedy” that they can find in an effort to provide themselves with some relief.
The fact is, you’re not going to get any relief from using toothpaste on your acne, so stick with washing your face with soap and water and let your body take care of the acne. Toothpaste is made for your teeth, not for your skin, so just leave it that way.
