Brittle and weak nails can be quite a problem for most women. They are usually caused by aging, as well as frequent exposure to harmful chemicals like detergents and nail polish removers that contain acetone (as one of their ingredients).
Whatever the cause is, there are simple home remedies that can help strengthen nails. And in this article, you’ll find some of the most effective tips to help strengthen your nails, keeping them strong and healthy:
1. Moisturize Your Nails Regularly
2. Keep Them Square
When you cut your nails, see that you shape them to be square instead of oval or pointed as square-shaped nails are less brittle.
3. Soak Them In Olive Oil
Every night before you go to sleep, soak your nails in olive oil for about 10 minutes. Put on a pair of gloves so that the oil is retained throughout the night.
4. Do Not Expose Your Nails To Harmful Substances
Try to keep your nails away from harmful chemicals (such as detergents) that can weaken your nails.
Always put on a pair of gloves prior to using these chemicals so that your nails will not come into direct contact with them.
Also, try and use nail polish removers that do not contain acetone.
5. Dietary Changes
Try to include lots of protein in your diet along with adequate amount of vitamins, minerals and fats.
If your nails are still weak, take vitamin supplements for nail strengthening under medical advice.
6. Avoid Acrylic Nails
Although acrylic nails can be used as a cover up for weak nails, they tend to weaken the nails further.
As such, you should avoid using acrylic nails and silk wraps as much as you can.
7. Keep Your Nails Clean
Keeping your nails clean by washing them frequently is very important as it can avoid spreading of infections. And don’t forget to moisturize them afterwards!
8. Nail Hardening Creams
Many nail hardening creams are available in the market like the “Barielle Nail Strengthener Cream” and “Sally Hansen No More Breaks Natural Nail Strengthener” that can be quite effective when applied regularly.
9. Sea Salt Water Soak
Soak your nails in warm water with some sea salt added to it for about 15-minutes to half an hour everyday for strong nails.
10. Regular Massage
Regular massage and manicures without the use of harmful chemicals can help in strengthening the nails as they can help improve blood circulation to the nails.
