It can be really confusing to pick the best make-up brushes – do you use natural or synthetic? Which size? Which brushes should you definitely invest in? While the choices are virtually infinite, we think that there are certain brushes that every woman should own.
For those of you wondering which brushes are most important to keep with your kit, here are our recommendations:

1. Lip Brush
One of the biggest makeup mistakes is applying lipstick directly from the tube. Better is to use a lip brush – the flat edge of the tube glides over the natural crevices of the lip, while a brush allows you to apply color more effectively for better coverage and longer lasting color.
You’ll also find that it’s easier to create a neat lip line when using a brush.
Our recommendation is the M.A.C. #316 lip brush. Use the brush to line your lips first, then load it up with more color to fill in. Start at the center of your lips, and blend out towards the edges. Blend the fill into the edge with short, exact strokes.

2. Blush Brush
Another brush you should invest in is your brush blush. Your decision on this brush should be based on how you like to apply your blush: for strong color, go with a dense brush; if you like a lighter application, use a softer brush.
Our recommendation for blush is the ergonomic blush brush from Avon. Its lighter, natural bristles pick up makeup well and allow you to apply either blush or bronzer evenly.

3. Concealer Brush
Often, the concealer brush is mistaken for an eyeshadow brush, because they have a similar wide, flat shape. However, concealer brushes are somewhat narrower which gives more precise control while applying concealer around the nose and mouth.
Avoid using your fingers to apply concealer, it can spread germs; instead use our recommendation – the One Step Complexion Brush #33 from Stila. Its synthetic bristles work well to blend liquid, cream or powder concealers.
4. Powder Brush
Powder is a must have finishing touch; it helps set makeup and give you a more put together look. The perfect powder brush lets you apply powder more evenly than you can with a puff for a lighter, more natural finish.
For powder, we recommend the Natural Hair powder brush from Mally Beauty. Its soft, round, natural bristles allow light, even application. For best use, dip the brush into loose powder, then tap off the excess. Brush it lightly over your face using a sweeping motion.
5. Foundation Brush
Foundation should never be applied with the fingers; it simply doesn’t blend as well and can end up looking streaked. Instead, use a foundation brush like EcoTools’ Flat Foundation Brush.
This brush has synthetic bristles that don’t collect oil, and its wide, flat design gives a more even coverage. Always start by applying your foundation to the middle of your face and work out to the edges for best coverage.
6. Eyeshadow Brush
The best choice for an eyeshadow brush is a stiff, natural bristled brush. Look for one that’s wide enough to cover the crease of your eyelid, and avoid soft brushes. A stronger, stiff brush allows for more intense application of color.
Our recommendation is the Tapered Shadow Brush from Bare Escentuals. Swirl the brush in the shadow, and then tap off excess powder. Press the paddle shaped brush against your lid to transfer color, angling the brush to blend at the edge. It’s better to press and blot makeup across your lid; wiping with the brush can pull on your delicate skin, leading to premature wrinkling.
