When money’s tight, the last thing you want to do is feel guilty about splurging on expensive cosmetics.
Still, we all need a little treat from time to time to help us feel special and pampered. Here’s how to get the best of both worlds:

1. Order Online
Nothing beats trying new shades in the stores to avoid expensive and ghastly color choice mistakes, but just because you’ve found the perfect shade of lipstick in that chain store, doesn’t mean you have to buy it there.
Make a note of the manufacturer and color details, and search online for cheaper suppliers. With heavy discounts available online, it may still be cheaper even if you have to pay a small shipping fee.
ELLE is the world’s largest fashion magazine edited for woman with a style – and a mind – of her own. Features include lifestyle, culture, entertainment, politics, music, theater and the arts. Click/tap here to find out more on Amazon.com >>
2. Opt for Travel/Trial Sized Makeup
Color trends change with the seasons, and make up has a shelf life of one or two years at most, so why would you want to buy a full size pot of nail varnish or huge slabs of eye color?
Opt for travel or trial size versions and you won’t be left with half used pots cluttering up your cosmetics bag for years to come.
Harper’s BAZAAR, the fashion authority, brings you the latest new looks from the hottest designers. You’ll get 12 beautiful issues a year full of best dressed secrets, must-haves and great finds. 3. Make The Most Of Your Makeup
You don’t need bags full of cosmetics to create a pulled together look.
Use concealer under the eyes and on the lids to prime them for makeup instead of buying expensive products just for the eyes. Choose natural shades of eye color that can double as blush, or use lip color as a creamy blush or even on eyelids for a dewy effect.
4. Collect Samples
Before you buy even a trial size portion of any cosmetic, try it out at the counter, or collect miniature samples. Scour magazines for sachets stuck to advertising pages, and ask at the cosmetics counter for any samples you take away and try.
5. Go Halves
If you can’t get trial sized products or samples, and you have to plump for a full size product, ask around your friends to see if any of them want to go halves with you.
Since neither of you are likely to use the whole thing, splitting the price and sharing the product makes sense. Buy a stash of small pots and crush eye shadows and blushers into them, or decant half of a pot of creamy foundation of lipstick into them.
6. Make The Most Of Sales
On the rare occasion, you find a shade that really works for you, watch out for sales and when it’s discontinued, buy a handful.
Makeup typically only starts to deteriorate once it’s opened, so long as they remain unopened they should last you for years, until you find a suitable replacement.
7. Clip Coupons
While you’re scouring the ads for samples, also keep an eye open for coupons. Clip them, and put them in your purse, so when you go shopping, you actually use them to save money on those must have cosmetics.
Don’t forget to collect store coupons as well as manufacturer coupons and double up for extra savings.
