A hangnail is a small piece of partially detached skin at either the base or side of a fingernail and is predominantly caused by a very dry cuticle. If the cuticle gets too dry, a hangnail will likely develop.
Many people are compelled to constantly pick and pull away at their hangnails, which may cause further irritation or even infection.
The following 3 tips suggest ways to prevent hangnails and/or what to do if you get one:
1. Use Scissors To Trim Away Your Hangnails
Use a pair of manicure scissors to cut down your hangnail instead of picking and pulling at it since this may lead to an open sore and cause infection.
Try to refrain from picking your hangnail once you trim it down. After a couple of days, all signs of the hangnail should disappear.
2. Use Moisturizer To Massage Your Cuticles Before Bedtime
At the end of the day before going to sleep, massage your cuticles with a quality, moisture-rich product. If you do not have a specific product readily available to use, try using petroleum jelly or even a lip balm as a substitute to moisturize.
Petroleum jelly is a very good choice since it contains beneficial fats that quickly and easily soak into the skin to hydrate it. The jelly part creates a protective film that seals in the necessary moisture.
Another option is to rub vitamin E oil into the entire cuticle and nail bed area to prevent hydration and more hangnails from occurring.
3. Moisturize Your Cuticles And Nails Every Day
Very dry hands and nails are not only dehydrated, but they can lead to dry cuticles and may cause hangnails. Therefore, it is essential to keep your cuticles and nails thoroughly moisturized and hydrated on a daily basis.
In order to keep the skin supple and hydrated, use a special cuticle cream or cuticle oil to massage into your hands, fingers, and cuticles every day. Implement this practice into your every day beauty regimen to prevent future hangnails.
