The usual constitution is 1 tablespoon of baking soda to a cup of water. Curly or thick hair styles may require a slightly stronger mix and thin hair may require a little less.

Firstly, soak your hair with plain water then apply the mix to your scalp. Gently rub the mixture through your hair. And lastly, just as with a shampoo wash, rinse thoroughly until all the mixture is removed.

Baking soda is great for hikers who regularly remove themselves from civilized areas for any length of time, as it takes up no room in a pack, weighs a lot less, and has other uses as well such as teeth cleaning.
